The Reasons For Dampness In Walls

Rising Damp

Capillary rising damp in old buildings is one of the main reasons for damages due to damp.

Old brick walls when saturated can hold up to 400 l of water per cubic meter. All building materials have holes, porosities and fine pores in which water slowly rises defying gravity due to capillary and electro physical forces. Capillary rises over 3 meters have been seen. Old buildings often have no horizontal and vertical water barriers or they deteriorated over time.

Water keeps rising higher the more evapotranspiration in the wall is limited. Tiled walls on the inside and fully heat insulated sealed walls on the outside can hold big surprises for their owners over time. Rising damp is not dependent on groundwater levels. It is a world wide problem and even exists in deserts. Building drainage with AquaEx is highly effective because it eliminates the cause for rising damp permanently
